Same finish... different buttons

Thank you!!! for all the comments.
I am pretty sure the buttons won the vote.
But Thanks to Cathey (aka Pumpkin) and AFWife, I changed it. I went to Lynn's of Madison
this weekend and picked out the snowflake buttons, then I stitched a couple of smyrna's
I was going to make a pillow this morning, but I need matching material, that is not in my tote of fabrics. How's it look now??

While I was at Lynn's on Saturday with Anna (no blog) (waving at ya) I picked out some fabrics to go with already had charts in my stash. I started 13 Owls and stitched all day watching the football games.

While I live in Bear country on the border of the Packers, I would like to Congratulate the Packer's win.

Good Luck against the Steeler's

"Thirteen Owls" by Plum Street Samplers

stitching on 40ct Purely Primitive w/ Crescent Colours

The instructions are 1 floss over 1 linen thread, I choose the 1 floss over 2 linen thread, do you blame me??!!

I have a really dumb question...

How do you know when your needle is wore out and you need to throw it out and start with a new fresh one??

Do you use only a needle for so long or so many projects??

I'd really love to hear what you have to say on this

Happy Stitching!!!!

Great stitching. When the needle snags the thread and fabric I know it's time to change it.

I get rid of mine when the plating wears off or the needle begins to 'smell' metallic to me. On a really big project, I usually wear at least one needle out. (note, my mom and I may be the only people on the planet who can smell our needles, so this weirdness may be totally useless to you!)

Great stitching and new start. I can't tell you how long I use mine. I usually lose them before I wear them out! :o)

If I'm stitching on 40ct the needle seems to wear out very quickly. It's when I get that horrid 'nails down a blackboard' feeling when I push the needle through the fabric - the needle gets thrown away!

Looks much lighter Ranae :o) Glad I could help!

Ohhh, purdy!

You know, I have no idea. I usually throw mine out if they break.

Great stitching. I am with Deb. I tend to lose my needles before they ever get to wear out lol.

Love your work and your scissors also. For me, when the eye breaks I switch. Other than that happening, I love the comfort bend of a good needle.
Be always in stitches.

I only get rid of a needle when it breaks.

Like Deb I lose my needles before they wear out. LOL Love the new buttons and the owls are looking good too.

That turned out cute! The only time I toss my needles is when the eye breaks, usually I just lose them.

I am so excited you took my and Cathey's suggestion. I really like how it looks with the buttons and the stitched snowflakes! Just love your stitchin'!

Beautiful! I like the changes. The PSS piece is so cute! Needles -- I tend to just use a needle till it's bent or broken. lol! I used to have them get tarnished, but that doesn't seem to happen anymore, strangely enough!

Your snowman looks great with those buttons! I love the new start and I remember Paulette saying that her pattern stated that wrong-it's really 1 over 2!

The snowman is so cute.

When a needle starts getting pits in it it is time to toss it. You can sometimes feel this is you pull the needle between your lips. Yes, I know that sounds weird, but it works. Sometimes you can tell if it starts to discolor also.

this is the 3rd adorable snowman I have seen in blogland this evening!!! Too cute!!! I love him..
Umm.....needles...I probably use them WAY TOO LONG!!!!!! I am going to read what other people said!!!

What a great finish! :D Wonderful choice of buttons. :D

Love your snowman!

Questions are only dumb if you don't ask them!

I use a needle until I find that the eye is constantly catching threads and tearing the bit of thread that is near the eye. I do tend to wear finish off certain needles (John James needles seem particulary bad for me), so once I notice the finish wearing, out the needle goes.

I also try to keep needles for metallics separate from needles for floss. Metallics seem rough enough to make the eye of the needle rough....

Cute snowman finish and love your new start too!

I toss my needles when the finish has worn off and they begin to "drag" through the fabric :)

Hi Ranae, I use a new needle with each project. I learned this at a guild meeting years ago. Or could it be the manufacture of the needles whispering into my ear. I do not like the gold needles because they do not glide thru the fabric. Also, I'm a needle snob, I like the "something" James needles. Deb

Great choice of buttons and stitches!
My needles brake... a lot... Guess I should loosen up... LOL!! Love your new Owl project!!

I use gold plated needles, it is easy to see when the plating starts to wear off because they don't look gold anymore, thats when they get replaced.
Love the new start

Beautiful finish, Ranae! I love your new start, too. I just got the JCS issue with Paulette in it--can't wait to read it!

As for the needles, I keep them around until they wear out. As robindefender said, I can smell mine, when they are a bit metallic-y, and they start to feel a bit gummy or sticky. I think it's when the plating wears off.

I love the snowflake buttons that you've added, Ranae--he is just perfect now!

Funny, I was just wondering the same thing about needles so I'll be interested to read peoples answers...

And I'm afraid we're on opposite sides for the Super Bowl--GO STEELERS :)

Loving the new start, those owls are really adorable

I only use piecemakers after being recommended them, i have a different needle in bigger WIP's and use the same one for smaller projects, not had to throw one out for quite a while

Jan said...

Ranae, the new buttons are great and I love your addition of the smyrna's...perfect. Love your new start, that particular design drew me in when it was released.

I am not sure that there is always the same reason..think when the finish seems somewhat scratchey and/or the needle itself or the eye of it is bent. Guess I am hard on them. I usually use a different needle with each project, then when I am done with that project, it rests on a magnet on my tin ort container.

Those buttons are awesome too!!

I change needles quite frequently. I find, also, that they get 'sticky' as the finish wears off and you don't realize HOW MUCH that is a hindrance to your stitching until you change to a new needle and the difference is amazing!

Carrotsicle is adorable! I love the snowflake buttons. Nice progress on your owl sampler too.

I have no idea when a needle is worn out, but when mine start to turn color I go for a new one.

Sue said...

Yup, the snowflakes look much better. I use a needle until it breaks but I have a friend who uses a new needle with each project and throws it out when the project is finished.

Loraine said...

The buttons are perfect! I toss my needle when it starts shredding my floss.
I love your new start! I can't imagine stitching over one on 40 count. I would be blind! Smart girl for doing over 2. :)
Hugs to you!

Love those buttons!

Super new start. You got a lot done.

I throw my needles when they snap or if they start to snag the thread.

Love the snowflakes. Great choice.
I throw my needles away quite often. My skin tends to eat the metal and turn them black so it doesn't take long till I'm on to the next one. And a girl can never be without her needles so I have 50 or so LOL.

Erica said...

Love the Carrotsicle!

I cannot even imagine retiring a needle!
I always lose them!

Meari said...

Yeah, the snowflake buttons look much better. :) Good start on 13 owls. Needles? I've never thrown mine away. I use them until I lose them, lol.

Love the new buttons. And your start on 13 Owls is so cute!

I like the buttons that you put along side the snowman. Looks great. Happy stitching. I stitched on my Hardanger project when the Packer game was on. Had a great time at Lynn's in Madison with you. Look forward to coming down by you to go shopping soon. Take Care. Anna

Yes I was bummed out that the Bears lost but I am not sure I can root for the Packers against the Steelers....tough choices! The buttons look great on your snowman finish - congrats!

Cindy said...

The snowflake buttons are perfect!

I don't pay much attention to my needles. I usually lose them before they wear out (LOL!) I will throw them away if the eye breaks or if the plating wears off.

Nancy M said...

The snowflake buttons really add to the piece! I only get rid of my needles if the eye bends, or it breaks.

Shelleen said...

The snowman is really cute.

The snowflake buttons are perfect! Do needles wear out...I thought my stitching chair ate them?!

lovely finish Ranae, the snowflake buttons are great
I throw them away when the eye snaps, but never worn one down, sorry I'm not much of a help
